Our mantel held a bent radio antenna and a charger. That was it. Then Ammi walked in with pine branches and told us the room starts there. Seven things later — two of them wrong first — she was right.
Our old sofa, six cheap fixes, and the December it finally felt like Christmas — plaid covers, a throw nobody folds, lights that tangled, and a candle with rules.

A work-from-home desk, a December deadline, and five small Christmas touches that made the coldest corner of the house the warmest — for less than a week’s chai money.
Our spare room was where suitcases went to be ignored — until Khala came for a week and we had to admit nobody had ever actually slept well in it.
Our porch was the part of the house nobody decorated — until the year guests started stopping at the gate instead of ringing the bell.
Ammi said the drawing room always got Christmas first. This year, the smallest bedroom in the house stole it — with plaid, fairy lights, and a tree that nearly fell off the nightstand twice.
Our drawing room had a corner nobody sat in — until Ammi, one cold December evening, decided it would become the warmest seat in the house.
Our staircase was the one place Christmas never reached — until Ammi handed us a garland, a box of lights, and a warning not to fight on the stairs.
Our whole house was dressed for Christmas except one small room — until Ammi looked at the bare bathroom mirror and said it looked sad. This is how Rs 1,580, a fallen garland and one dead string of lights turned it into the cosiest corner of the house.
